Therefore, I readily appreciated his clear legal explanation of “covenant marriage” as contrasted with “civil marriage” in “An Open Letter to Those Who Think I’ve Lost My Christian Faith.” (https://thedispatch.com/newsletter/frenchpress/an-open-letter-to-those-who-think-ive-lost-my-christian-faith/)

However, I cannot see how this distinction helps David support the proposed U.S. Senate bill called the “Respect for Marriage Act.” (Senate substitute for HR 8404). The proposed bill mandates nationwide recognition for civil same sex marriages when authorized by state law in the state where they occurred.

Here is the stated moral foundation for the proposed bill: “Congress finds the following: (1) No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. (2) Diverse beliefs about the role of gender in marriage are held by reasonable and sincere people based on decent and honorable religious or philosophical premises. Therefore, Congress affirms that such people and their diverse beliefs are due proper respect.” Then the bill goes on the establish legal strictures.

I agree with David that a government may legally create different kinds of marriage including marriage between people of the same sex. I also honor David’s desire to help LGBTQ families live “stable joyful lives.” However, I fear the consequences of mandating respect for LGBTQ marriage as a national policy.

The Bible suggests that people of a nation that legitimatizes such relationships may earn the wrath of God instead of stable joyful lives. (See for example Romans 1 and 2, Ephesians 5:1-14, and Colossians 3:5-6). A person who doesn’t believe in the God of the Bible or who doesn’t consider the Bible authoritative may not worry about this consequence.
First, my Mom who unfailingly prayed with me when she put me to bed as a child, and drove me and several neighbor kids to church on Sundays. My Mom continued to worship faithfully for all her 94 years.

The second was my grandmother Mary, my mother’s mother, who became a widow when I was 5 or 6 years old. Living a difficult life, my grandmother seemed to sing both a sad song and a hopeful song. I heard this song when she prayed with me beside her big bed during the time my Mom and I lived with her during World War Two. I can see and hear my grandmother now, earnest, honest, and humbly dependent on our Father in heaven.

The third person whose life sang and still sings of Jesus, is my Mom’s brother - Uncle Bud. (His real name is Fred.) When I was about 10 or 12, and had some questionable ideas about God and worshipping Him, Uncle Bud patiently helped me recognize kinks in my thinking and improved my understanding of Jesus.

The fourth person whose life sang of Jesus was Parkie, Dora Parkins, a retired missionary who baby-sat me and my siblings and gently but forcefully insisted that I study the Bible. Why? Because Parkie said God inspired its every word. What made me cooperate with Parkie was her life and belief in the Bible’s teaching. She was not always entertaining, but she was always earnestly insisting that I must know the God of the Bible. With my parents’ permission I went with her to church and met people young and old who believed and lived with the same lively faith as Parkie.

These dear people did not make a Christian of me. In my late teens I fled their way of life as fast as I could. It was too restricting. However, God used them to put His mark on me, and when I turned my face to Jesus I had learned from them where the truth about God is found. I knew from experience what it’s like to worship where the word of God is valued and where people in the church respond with changed lives.

I thank God for putting His mark on me when I was very young through my Mom, grandmother, Uncle Bud and Parkie. They taught me to listen for the song of Jesus in the speech, life, writing, and worship of Christians, and showed me how in Jesus I can become a better man than I am.

She likes to joke that she caught my attention with a fried chicken dinner. There is some truth to that, but hardly the whole story. The chicken may have won some of my attention, but Barbara’s attentiveness won the evening.

After dinner, and after the other guests had left, we sat and talked till about 4 a.m. as I remember. Probably I talked till 4 a.m. and Barbara got a word in here and there. I was on fire for “world peace through law” at the time. That hasn’t worked out yet, but the conversation was the beginning of the best and most loving friendship I can imagine.

As I learned when we married and the years passed, Barbara is a good listener not only to me but to many people. And I have learned from her how to listen better.

Listening is important. Henri Nouwen said: “Listening is much more than allowing another to talk while waiting for a chance to respond. Listening is paying full attention to others and welcoming them into our very beings. The beauty of listening is that, those who are listened to start feeling accepted, start taking their words more seriously and discovering their own true selves. Listening is a form of spiritual hospitality by which you invite strangers to become friends, to get to know their inner selves more fully, and even to dare to be silent with you.”

Barbara also loves offering hospitality, and I have seen many people blossom when experiencing her hospitality in our home. <p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I have just read the prayer of King Solomon, David’s son, dedicating the temple he built for the Lord God in Jerusalem. In the prayer he looked ahead to the defeats, afflictions, and sins of his people, and prayed for their repentance, redemption and forgiveness. 1 Kings 8:22-53. In it he prayed that when they repented and turned back to the Lord He would receive them and maintain their cause.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The thought occurred to me that we American Christians too seldom turn to God and together pray for our people’s redemption and the redemption of other peoples. We too seldom pray the way that Solomon was praying.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Should we not fervently and repeatedly turn to God and in the name of Christ pray for deliverance out of sin, its ensuing afflictions and into faithfulness to God and His will and plan? For ourselves and for people of other nations?

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I think of Russia’s war on Ukraine and the thoughts of other nations about helping or not helping Ukraine. How many Americans - especially the church - have humbly and publicly confessed our sins and departure from God’s way and asked to be guided in the way of His solutions? Should we not?

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I think of national responses to the plague of Covid19.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">We should think seriously about who’s in charge here. Is it President Putin, President Zelensky, our president and other leaders? Or God the creator of heaven and earth and its redeemer? Solomon believed it is God, and prayed publicly that in future national miseries the people of Israel would repent and return to God and God would take up their cause.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Should Christians in America and elsewhere pray more like Solomon for ourselves and for the church in other nations?
Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-222279422276394602022-07-09T06:05:00.006-07:002022-07-27T11:04:55.448-07:00Some things are getting scarce …

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Going to the grocery store with my mom during World War Two was often fraught with disappointment at empty spaces in the shelves or at the checkout counter. I say checkout counter because that was the main place where our store displayed candy when it was available. Candy was seldom available because of sugar rationing.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">One of the sweetest things in life is kindness and acceptance by friends. Humility in appraising my faults.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Some bitter collateral damage of the war against Covid19 (and variants) is explicit and implicit questioning of my judgment by a small number of my friends when I mask up for indoor gatherings. Never have I met this number of amateur scientists nor critics of public figures who recommend uncomfortable disease precautions.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Please let me declare, I have no particular expertise in medical science. In fact I may be choosing the wrong experts to listen to and follow.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Still, in masking up I feel I do no one harm and reluctantly accept an unconventional - not to say “odd” - appearance.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Here is my scientific basis for the practice: I have had only one respiratory infection in more than two years during Covid. And no sign of Covid19. This compares favorably with my customary bronchitis and occasional pneumonia in prior years.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">My experience is my primary “science” for masking up.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Please let me suggest this to critics: humility. It goes down better and makes me a better listener.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I know only one person who makes a living in science. He has not expressed an opinion about Covid19 to me. I really appreciate that. I would love to know his opinion, but not as a critic.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">*****
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">“Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.” James 3:13 (NASB)

Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-32117593282556745932022-07-05T09:59:00.017-07:002022-08-05T15:53:58.532-07:00 People don’t believe in the supernatural anymore …
“People don’t believe in the supernatural anymore.” That’s what my cousin said after reading my long piece about the rescue of famous World War One hero “Captain Eddie” Rickenbacker and six companions from the Pacific Ocean in World War Two. America was fighting Japan in the Pacific.

My cousin and I both believe in the supernatural.

The Rickenbacker Mission pilot, Captain Bill Cherry, credited their survival to “divine intervention” and insisted this be inserted in the record of their post-rescue interrogation. (Rickenbacker's mission was to deliver a secret message from the Secretary of War to General Douglas MacArthur the Pacific theater Army commander.) Seven men survived; one died of pre-existing illness and drinking salty ocean water.

Briefly, here’s what happened.

On October 21, 1942, the B-17D Flying Fortress carrying the Rickenbacker Mission became lost flying from Hawaii to Australia when navigation instruments failed. Before fuel ran out Captain Cherry ditched the plane safely between two wave crests and crew and passengers evacuated into three small life-rafts. At first hopeful of quick rescue, the fliers fell into hopelessness in a few days.

Then the men spied John Bartek, the flight engineer, reading from a pocket Bible given him by his hometown church. Bible reading was not a habit for any of them but they began to gather the three rafts daily for reading the Bible aloud and praying. One passage became a favorite: Matthew 6, verses 31-34, words spoken by Jesus. Do not be anxious; seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all you need will be given you.And focus on today’s challenges, not tomorrow’s.

Co-pilot Whittaker recorded miraculous answers to their prayers in a pocket notebook (from which he later wrote a book). Among the prayers answered were prayers for water on Days 7, 11 and 13 that brought immediate results in the form of rain squalls passing over the rafts, each squall renewing exhausted water supplies from previous downpours.

On Day 20, after several friendly planes passed over the rafts without seeing them, Cherry split off alone, deciding dispersed rafts would more likely be spotted than three rafts linked together. Rickenbacker protested but Cherry went anyway. Whittaker soon followed Cherry in a raft with two other crew members.

A U.S. Navy float plane scouting for enemy activity spotted Cherry’s raft and called in a rescue boat. Cherry described the location of the other rafts and Rickenbacker and two companions were found and brought to safety.

The Whittaker raft drifted near an island, and Whittaker paddled to safety while shouting prayers for God to help him defeat the powerful currents that were forcing the raft past the island back into open sea. He and his two fellow crew members made it ashore and were found by natives who alerted the U.S. Navy. By November 14, 1942 all the fliers but one were safe.

If I hadn’t already believed in an all-powerful and merciful God, I would have found it hard to disbelieve after reading the reports by pilots Cherry and Whittaker and flight engineer John Bartek, and seeing their declarations that God had engineered their rescue.

Co-Pilot Whittaker’s book about the episode, now out of print, is Whittaker, J. My stepfather treated me like one of his own children and constrained my new older brother and sister to do the same. “There will be no ‘steps’ in this family!” So it was. He took pains to teach all of us self discipline. He showed us all father-love. He was friendly when my natural father came to visit me.

My natural father - within the limitations of our separation - took pains to be touch with me and be a part of my growing up. He taught me to fish with a fly rod - an uncommon way of fishing then for a boy from Texas. He contributed to my education through law school. When I was about thirty he and I moved to the same city to work and began to know one another on a daily basis.

One day when Mom was getting along in years, she looked at me and said: “You are fortunate to have two fathers who are honorable men.” She was right. I was more than fortunate; I was greatly blessed.

Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-77547244733554894792022-05-28T08:13:00.005-07:002022-05-28T08:25:48.688-07:00An Open Letter to President Joseph R. We recall the tension of not knowing whether we would win intense battles in two parts of the world.

We remember the way joy erupted when the war ended favorably to our side, and friends and family came home. Sadly, not all of them.

Now we see another power, Russia, crushing its neighbor Ukraine, headed toward Europe. There is no way to stop this invader without risking nuclear war - if we credit Russian threats. What must today’s generation do?

The modern generation must consider the same kind of choice made by the World War Two generation. You (and we of the prior generation who have lived into the twenty first century) must answer the question, “Can we allow any nation destroy the people of a neighboring nation at will?” Are other people’s lives and freedom worth contending for?

There is no assurance of success if the decision is to contend on behalf of Ukraine and take serious risks in an effort to protect Ukraine and Europe from the same fate they suffered under Nazi Germany.

Still it is a choice dropped in your younger laps, and to some extent into the laps of us older folks.

In the twentieth century America chose to join in Europe’s fight against invading and murdering Nazis and Asia’s fight against murdering Japanese militarists. That was before nuclear weapons came along. Do we today have the courage to confront enemies that threaten modern war?

Americans of the World War Two generation accepted the fight to defeat militarists in Germany and Japan. The militarists of 2022 are no less a threat. Shall we confront them? Will we confront them, and will we endure the finish?

God knows. God can show us the way. We’d better ask Him.

Douglas Smith, March 15, 2022

Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-32447201927345951432021-09-24T05:20:00.003-07:002021-09-24T06:19:00.091-07:00Grasp for a handhold, or reach for the strong hand?
When I was young I was bold to climb or descend a steep hillside when hiking in rough country. Perhaps overconfident I would scramble up for a better view of my surroundings, or down to get a close look at a flowering shrub. I often was startled to discover that a stone I grasped to pull myself up came loose and required me to shift quickly to another hoped-for support, or that a ledge I put my foot on crumbled and fell away. I feel that way about the affairs, the culture of our nation today. Things that always seemed firm come loose and leave me scrambling for another handhold or foothold.

Trust in Jesus Christ, my new-found faith of forty years, keeps me moving with trembling assurance to the high ground where the view is bright and fresh, and the flowering shrubs may be enjoyed in peace and safety. Politics, law, and even reasonable financial security are not leading me to the grand vista and the beautiful life I desire, but gripping the hand of Jesus Christ is bringing the vista and the beauty closer and helping me continue the climb. My prayer is, when my view of the path threatens to be obscured by passions or fears, that Christ will keep my hand in his firm grasp and even squeeze it reassuringly while we move ahead.

Morning, September 24, 2021
Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-38737062802861306092021-03-29T06:58:00.005-07:002021-04-04T14:44:32.304-07:00The New Sin of the Day<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Our western culture seems increasingly self-righteous. The Opinion of an Old Prosecutor<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px; text-align: justify;">Charges that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” from President Trump have inspired reckless anger and violence in America. It is highly improbable that the election was stolen because the President could prove it if proof were available.

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">A President has operatives in every federal judicial district of the United States. I mean, he appoints United States Attorneys in every one of the 94 federal judicial districts throughout the United States and territories. They serve at his pleasure. They would have reported any widespread election fraud to him through his Department of Justice. I have not heard of any such reports.

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;">

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">As an Assistant U.S. Attorney many years ago, I learned that among the duties of an assistant was to work late on election nights to receive reports of election misconduct. Reports might come directly to us during the day or night. More often they came to the FBI and the FBI contacted us for the go-ahead to conduct a preliminary inquiry. These resulted in a record being made that was available if a major investigation should be launched. The current Justice Manual of the U.S. Department of Justice reveals that similar procedures remain in place.

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;">

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">In the conflict over the 2020 presidential election results, I have not heard Justice Department records cited in support of widespread election fraud. Every United States Attorney (there are 94 ) would have reported evidence of significant election misconduct to Washington. It's their job. Moreover, all U.S. Attorneys stand to lose their jobs if the incumbent president is defeated. Again, if significant evidence of widespread election fraud existed, the President would know about it and presumably would cite it to bolster his complaint that the election was stolen.
<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Attorney General William Barr told the Associated Press on December 1, 2020 that the Department of Justice had found no evidence of widespread voter fraud that would change the election outcome.

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;">

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I have heard of no United States Attorney reports cited in support of the President's claim so I conclude his claim of a stolen election is unsupported. What about malicious computer software? I have heard the dramatic allegations that subversive computer software may have altered votes but I have not heard that any authority has substantiated them.

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;">

<p style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">So, what should disappointed Americans do? If one’s candidate lost the election, he or she should focus on putting together a winning slate for next time.

What makes the story interesting is seeing how her upbringing in a happy family led Tammie Jo Bonnelle (later Captain Tammie Jo Shults) to acquire the discipline that shaped important decisions in her eventful life. The story begins in childhood on her family’s ranch and concludes dramatically with her piloting a barely controllable airliner to a safe landing after the explosion of an engine breached the side of her Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 jet. She shows how challenges and obstacles in her career also blessed her, training her to think and act wisely where prospects for a good outcome looked dim. Key to dealing with seemingly hopeless situations was the Christian faith she acquired as a girl in summer camp. This faith led her to trust God for the outcome and not rely solely on her (considerable) personal and professional skills.

Note: Military and Aviation Terminology. Having served in the Air Force, I felt comfortable with the author’s occasional use of military and aviation terminology and acronyms. She was thoughtful to provide a “Quick Reference Guide for Military Terminology” in an appendix. Like any reader, the military terminology guide “put me in the picture” when my military and aviation memory was faded or incomplete. You might think so from news reports in America. In recent months we have seen pictures on tv of protests in the name of just causes where people innocent of the wrongs being protested are unjustly injured or killed and protesters destroy uninvolved homes and businesses. A plane with no propeller!

Look! A plane with no propeller!

It was 1945. World War 2 had just ended. I was 6 years old. My friends and I were airplane nuts, collecting magazines with photos and facts about all kinds of combat airplanes. We had memorized all sorts of information about maximum speeds, service ceiling, rates of climb, and so forth.

We had seen lots of military planes over our neighborhood, making their low approaches to or takeoffs from nearby Dallas’ Love Field.

However, we had never seen an airplane fly without a propeller. Nor one that roared like a volcano.

One afternoon a neighbor across the street shouted something like, “Look! A Jap plane.”

Startled, I looked up and there it was: not a Japanese plane but a jet plane. A jet fighter plane passing low over our neighborhood with no propeller turning.

Investigating later, I learned we had seen the new P-80 “Lightning.”

The same sight would not startle kids today who have seen hundreds of prop-less jet planes pass over.

Still, when the neighbors and I saw our first jet plane we knew immediately we had entered into a new flying age. An exciting age that promised unimaginable new aircraft.

Buck Rogers was no longer just a comic strip!

Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-1965964604765095722020-08-31T09:35:00.013-07:002020-08-31T17:37:13.482-07:00The Deadly Grip of Pride
Selfish pride imposes fantasy ethics on a real world.

Nationwide rioting followed publication of a video that shows a policeman kneeling on the neck of a man George Floyd who shortly died. The video recalled other instances of deadly misconduct by agents of law enforcement, and demonstrations arose in cities across America and continue.

A demand for just conduct by police has been one focus of the demonstrations; specifically that policemen must treat with justice and restraint prisoners and others they encounter in performance of duties. That is a demand that Americans can understand, organize to deal with, and bring about changes in the legal framework that governs police behavior.

Hopefully a spirit of mutual respect between police and citizens will grow out of collaborative efforts to strengthen the flawed framework of discipline for rogue policemen.

Tragically, violence and visionary agendas for transforming society are filling the space for conversation about specific, reasonable and manageable reform.

A psalm of David says: “O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and marvelous for me.” Psalm 31:1. This is the humble spirit I see in the grieving anger of people who have joined to peaceably seek change in the behavior that killed George Floyd.

They are demanding do-able corrections to definable wrongs. I honor that spirit and join with them.

However, the spirit of people breaking, burning, assaulting and killing that occurs alongside gatherings of peaceable people is not the spirit to which King David referred. The violent people seem to use the heartbreak over George Floyd for a springboard to promote their conception of a new social order. Arrogance. Pride.

They are not striving to bring justice and restraint to law enforcement. Their hearts ARE lifted up; their eyes ARE raised too high: they DO occupy themselves with things too great and marvelous for them.

The persisting violence has placed America at a crossroads: those who desire correction of rogue policemen must find a way of expressing their demands that does not provide a springboard for revolutionaries. For this to occur governors, mayors, and local leaders must honor their oaths of office and not stand on the sidelines.

They must maintain order.

Firmness with justice may not earn them any votes, but it may restore safety to their states, cities and neighborhoods.

The other branch of the crossroads, standing aside as many are doing, leads to endless escalation of disorder and inconceivable harm to our citizens.

If black lives are to matter every time black people encounter police, it’s time to focus and insist on specific measurable reforms in policing. Britons constantly had their lives interrupted, some permanently. Our American President’s Emergency Order was issued March 13, 2020, and today is April 17, 2020, thirty six days. Can Americans maintain discipline as long as the Brits, to safeguard thousands of lives from COVID 19?

In the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are praying for front line health professionals. Do we have a clear picture of the number and kinds of health professionals who merit our prayers and support?

Many of our leaders call this pandemic “a war.” I agree. How many individuals will be defending your life if you must be hospitalized?

Let’s compare with the U.S. military for a perspective on the number of our health defenders; people who are putting themselves at deadly risk.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, a typical U.S. Marine platoon is 27 Marines.

Twenty-seven individuals.

A typical U.S. Army platoon is 36 soldiers.

In the healthcare system, practitioners say at least 33 teams are caring for emergency patients: beginning with the EMTs who take you to the hospital and (hopefully) concluding with the team at the skilled nursing facility/transitional care unit and the team at home care services. (Please be sure to read this link including comments.)

Multiple professionals serve you on most of these teams.

The healthcare people who serve you are no less at risk than a Marine or Army platoon.

Add to their number their families, roommates, and essential social contacts like grocers, and it is easy to appreciate the need to avoid needlessly introducing yourself into the healthcare system.

Two of my cousins and a niece are health professionals. Perhaps more if some have slipped my mind. May God guide them and protect them and their families.

My prayer is for those who serve, and for those of us who are able take precautions and avoid putting at greater risk them, their loved ones, and associates.
Virtual worship is real worship, yet not the same as shoulder-to-shoulder worship in the same room. Virtual shopping works all right, but is not the same as interacting with flesh and blood store people and examining and touching goods we might purchase.

The present regimen of “stay home” and everywhere “keep a social distance” may teach us the very real value of being among other people, and NOT keeping our distance from the people we love most. If we learn these things, the satisfaction derived from human relationships will be greater than it was before covid-19.Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-88540610707101756942020-03-24T07:33:00.002-07:002020-03-24T07:34:54.360-07:00COVID-19: Should health measures be loosened due to economic toll?“Lawrence Summers, a Harvard economics professor and former U.S. Treasury Secretary, said much of this economic toll would be hitting the U.S. even without government-mandated restrictions. Fears of contagion would likely be driving people on their own to avoid restaurants, airplanes and ballparks, even without government mandates, such as mandates in New York and California that people stay home.

“A large part of the dislocation is caused by the coronavirus and not by the policy response caused by the coronavirus,” Mr. Summers said. “I don’t think we need to turn this into a dollars-versus-lives thing at this stage.” He said the best choice was likely addressing the health risk, treating the economic damage, and then working to prevent future pandemics.”

“As Economic Toll Mounts, Nation Ponders Trade-Offs,” Wall Street Journal, March 24, 2020Douglas Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16165893158287129896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8060378629527571240.post-41181001221292098432020-03-19T05:25:00.003-07:002020-03-19T05:25:57.139-07:00As the deer pants for streams of water ...This morning I have read Psalm 42, and seen David’s words: “When shall I come and appear before God?”
After a couple of weeks absent from our congregation because of sickness, and now by emergency COVID-19 restrictions, I am better able to appreciate David’s longing.
Charles Spurgeon commented, “He who loves the Lord loves also the assemblies wherein his name is adored. Vain are all pretences to religion where the outward means of grace have no attraction. David was never so much at home as in the house of the Lord; he was not content with private worship; he did not forsake the place where saints assemble, as the manner of some is.”
I appreciate the opportunity of worshipping with the help of electronic means that so many churches including my own are providing, and thank God for them. Nonetheless it will be wonderful to worship again shoulder to shoulder with brothers and sisters in Christ.
